Grad publishes memoir

Dr. Martha Dukes Yow, a 1943 graduate of the MUSC College of Medicine, has published a memoir that describes her life in rural South Carolina, her medical training, her efforts to be the perfect wife and mother and her 40 years in pediatrics and infectious diseases. Balancing Act chronicles her life; the challenges of her professional career as a physician, teacher and research scientist; and the changes in medicine and in societyâs attitude toward working women. The book provides a candid, humorous and engaging story of an amazing woman who served as a trail-blazer for women in academic medicine.

Yow completed her training at Bowman Gray, Duke University and Baylor. She served on the Baylor faculty from 1955 until 1989 and is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the 1992 Distinguished Alumnus Award presented by the MUSC Medical Alumni Association. Retired now, she lives in Houston, Texas.

Balancing Act, priced at $19.95, is available through the MUSC Alumni Association Gift Shop, located in the Sebring-Aimar House on the MUSC campus. Through Dr. Yowâs generosity and special arrangements with her publisher, proceeds from sale of the book will benefit the College of Medicine scholarship fund.
