COLLEGE OF DENTAL MEDICINE

professor, director of the Division of Dental Public Health and Oral Epidemiology
and member of the Center for Health Care Research and Troy
Hull, senior dental student, recently spent two weeks in rural Dominican
Republic to provide restorative, oral surgery and prosthodontic services
to more than 900 patients. Dentists and dental students from the universities
of Maryland and Mississippi, as well as Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo,
also joined the effort to provide dental treatment.
OTOLARYNGOLOGY
David Osguthorpe,
M.D., was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the American Academy
of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, an organization of approximately
11,000 otolaryngologists from across the nation. Osguthorpe serves on the
Editorial Board of the academyâs journal, Otolaryngology, Head and Neck
Surgery, the largest worldwide circulation in this specialty, and this
year became an alternate delegate to the American Medical Association.
He has also recently been appointed to the Editorial Board of The Journal
of the South Carolina Medical Association (SCMA) and the SCMAâs Continuing
Education Committee.
STUDENT PROGRAMS
The World Music Concert, Huayucaltia, will be held
at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at the Simons Center, Recital Hall, College
of Charleston. Tickets are $2 and are available at the Student Programs
office. A free reception will be available following the performance. The
concert is sponsored by MUSC's Student Government Association and the Cultural

Organization President's Luncheon will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in the

STUDENT NATIONAL MEDICAL ASSOCIATION
MUSC's chapter of the Student National Medical
Association (SNMA) will be sponsoring its first Babysit-A-Thon on Saturday,
Sept. 27. Medical students in this organization will babysit your children
for three hours at your home for a donation of $25 ($8.50 for each addtional
hour). The money raised will be used for community service and professional
development activities. Treat yourself to a day out while helping SNMA's
community service oriented organization. All babysitters are students enrolled

Holmes selected for leadership
program
MUSCâs Dylan
Holmes was selected to participate in the 1997-98 Executive Leadership
Development Program. A research associate for the Environmental Hazards
Assessment Program, Holmes was one of 10 black professionals selected nationally.
Sponsored by the National Forum for Black Public Administrators (NFBPA),
the Executive Leadership Institute consists of seven rigorous training
sessions designed to strengthen the leadership skills of aspiring executive
administrators and managers. The curriculum for the program includes concentrated
study in management and professional development topics, including finance
management, leadership and problem solving ethics, strategic career planning
and public speaking. The final session and graduation ceremony will be
held in conjunction with the 16th annual conference of the NFBPA in April
1998, in Cleveland, Ohio. A faculty member of the Outreach Division in
the Department of Development and Training, Holmes was excited when he
received the news, ãI think itâs fantastic and a great honor. I think it
will be beneficial to both me and MUSC.ä
Workshop to discuss employee
rights to be held
The Office of Diversity is conducting
workshops to discuss the MUSC Equal Employment Opportunity policy and explain
individual employee rights and responsibilities. These workshops are designed
for non-supervisory personnel. All supervisors are encouraged to let as
many employees attend the workshops as possible. It is important that each
employee attend one session. All sessions are from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept.

Nominations being accepted for honorary
degrees, distinguished faculty service awards
It is time to begin the process of selecting
persons to receive:
1) Honorary degrees from MUSC, to be awarded at commencement in May 1998; and
2) MUSC Distinguished Faculty Service awards for 1998-99, to be awarded at the Fall 1998 Faculty Convocation. Honorary Degrees generally go to individuals in the following broad categories:
Distinguished Faculty Service awards are specifically intended to recognize and honor faculty members of MUSC who, during a substantial portion of their careers, have provided exceptional and sustained service and contributions in teaching, research, health care and/or public service to the university and the citizens of South Carolina.
Please consider making nominations of candidates in these categories and submitting them to the Office of the Provost no later than Sept. 30. Copies of nomination forms for the MUSC Distinguished Faculty Service Award may be obtained from the Office of the Provost, 792-3031.

Submission of work to Humanities
Committee
The Humanities Committee invites students,
faculty and staff to submit artistic endeavors to be considered for inclusion
in the second volume of Humanitas, the literary magazine of MUSC. Four
categories of work will be considered: poetry, essays, photography and
fiction. There is no preference or restriction regarding content.
The deadline for submission is Oct. 1. Please include a cover sheet with your name, MUSC affiliation, address and telephone number.
