Food
Guide Pyramid basis for healthy eating
by Danielle Kelley, Dietetic Intern The American Dietetic Association (ADA) declared March as National Nutrition Month. Because healthy eating fuels fitness at each stage of life, it is important to become aware of the patterns to promote health. Healthy eating should start at an early age to develop appropriate habits in order to live a longer, healthier life. Physical activity is another component to living healthy. Each person needs the same nutrients, but because of differences in age, gender and body size, nutrients are needed in different amounts. The Food Guide Pyramid should be the basis for healthy eating. The pyramid emphasizes a diet based on grain products, fruits, and vegetables with moderate amounts of dairy products and lean meats and small amounts of fats, oils and sweets. In addition to following the Food Guide Pyramid, the following advice is offered by ADA: Children
Women
Older Adults
