SGA president welcomes students back, provides update

by Kelby Hutcheson
President, MUSC SGA
Happy New Year! On behalf of the MUSC Student Government Association, I wish to welcome you back for the spring semester. For new students, I extend a warm welcome and an assurance that you will find this campus to be an inviting and supportive place to pursue your education. This has been an exciting year at MUSC. With the installment of our new president, Dr. Ray Greenberg, there is an air of excitement about MUSC's future.

The MUSC SGA has been hard at work addressing your concerns. After gathering student input from all six colleges, it was decided by majority vote to continue conducting “in-line” parking registration. With all the options and suggestions on the table (on-line, lottery, etc.), SGA representatives felt in-line distribution was still the best option. We are now working to enhance the process, scheduled for Wednesday, April 12 at 6:15 a.m. and 6:15 p.m. in the HSC gymnasium.

Other improvements slated for this semester are the creation of a 24-hour study room and a new university ID card. Construction should begin very soon on the 24-hour study room, which will be located in the old Enrollment Services office. The new university ID card will combine several important functions, including library use, card key access to campus buildings, identification and, soon, debit. I believe you will find these changes to be very positive.

Recently we performed a walk-through of campus with Public Safety to address concerns about lighting and safety. We were very impressed with Public Safety's quick response time and the advanced video cameras, which allow officers to monitor every area of the MUSC campus. I encourage all students to check out the Public Safety web page (http://www.musc.edu/publicsafety/) for a map of call boxes on campus and use the campus  escort service that Public Safety provides.

This semester we have a great schedule of events lined up for students. The Winetasting is coming up  on Jan. 21. Stay tuned for announcements about the Oyster Roast, the St. Luke's Concert Series, Charity Ball and Fat Tuesday in the Horseshoe. Also, this year marks the 50th anniversary of Alhambra, MUSC's biggest student event. This spring it will be held on Saturday, April 8, at Joe Riley Stadium from 4:30 to 10 p.m. This exciting celebration includes a plethora of food, beverages, live music by Uncle Mingo and tons of fun activities for children of all ages.

The evening will finish with a bang of fireworks display worthy of the 50th anniversary.

Please talk this up amongst your classmates, as Alhambra only improves with turnout.

I hope this semester goes extremely well. If there is anything that SGA can do for you, please contact your class representative or myself (hutchejk@musc.edu). Take care and take part in campus activities.
