Sexual assault clinic model implemented at MUSC

A model program to make the forensic and medical exam for rape victims less anxiety provoking and more standardized is being implemented at MUSC.

The program aims to improve care and service to rape victims in the Tri-county area, while maximizing effective evidence collection for the prosecution of rapists.

Balancing the needs of rape victims with the needs of law enforcement presents unique problems to service providers; the corps of volunteer nurses who make up MUSC’s sexual assault team have been tremendously successful in providing caring, sensitive and supportive care to victims.

Nurses are still being recruited to perform post-rape forensic exams. To maintain state-of- the-art forensic procedures, a Sexual Assault Examiner workshop will be offered Oct. 22-25. Course hours and content will count toward Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) certification for nurses. Continuing education credits may also be arranged.

This workshop is open to all nurses and physicians interested in participating in MUSC’s post-rape forensic exam project. If you are interested in becoming a part of the sexual assault team, call Deborah Freel at 792-2366 or Faye Leboeuf at 792-9891. Leave your name, number and home address on voice-mail.

Current and new volunteer nurses are also invited to attend the new training sessions. Call Freel or Leboeuf to verify attendance and dates of training.
