Leuner appointed to DACOWITS 


Jean D’Meza Leuner, Ph.D., R.N., has been appointed by Secretary of Defense William Cohen to the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS).

Leuner is an associate dean for academics and evaluation and associate professor in the College of Nursing.

DACOWITS was established in 1951 by then Secretary of Defense George C. Marshall.  The Committee is composed of 36 civilian men and women who are appointed by the Secretary of Defense to provide recommendations relevant to the optimum utilization of women in America’s armed forces and on quality of life issues impacting the mission and readiness of our military women. 

Committee members are selected on the basis of their strong records in civic leadership and their outstanding reputations in business, education, the professions or public service. Historically, DACOWITS’ recommendations have been instrumental in affecting changes to laws and policies pertaining to military women.

Leuner serves on the board of the South Carolina League for Nursing and the South Carolina Nurses Association Ethics Committee. She is the chair-elect of the S.C. Council of Deans and Directors of Nursing Education and a member of the Advisory Committee on Nursing to the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation Board of Nursing repesenting baccalaureate and masters education. She serves as a manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Nursing Education, and has authored a text for nursing education as well as published numerous articles regarding issues in nursing education, as well as quality of life, social support and hardiness.
