Local charities receive money from COM Charity Ball The night the College of Medicine had a ball, four local charities could have breathed a little easier. Representing the four charities were, left to right, Denise Ciccarelli of Crisis Ministries; Michelle Bellemare of Low Country Food Bank; Karen Jones of Winners on Wheels; Dolores Greene of Reid House of Christian Service; and Gail Smith, also of Crisis Ministries. They found out about it Wednesday, April 5, when the college’s Medical Student Alumni Council presented each charity with $6,250—totaling the $25,000 the council raised at the Charity Ball/Silent Auction, Feb. 26, at the Francis Marion Hotel. The council’s 32 members sponsored the silent auction and solicited local businesses for items. Proceeds from the silent auction came from competing bids made by Charity Ball guests on donated items from businesses and individuals. The total declared value of the items amounted to more than $63,500. The charities receiving the donations were: Crisis Ministries, which provides a family center, men’s shelter, soup kitchen and food rescue program, health clinic, chaplain program and social programs designed to move the clients up and out of the center. Low Country Food Bank, which feeds the hungry in the 10 coastal counties of South Carolina, and has designed a special Kid’s Café to provide children with after school help as well as a hot meal before going home. Reid House of Christian Service, which provides services for “special needs” foster children and homeless children to facilitate their adoption. Winners on Wheels, which empowers youth in wheelchairs to be all that they can be, challenging them to reframe their environment and to contribute to their community.
