PA library to be named in student's memory

On Friday, Aug. 18, the Dean’s Office of the College of Health Professions and the Physician Assistant Program will dedicate the Will Hagood Memorial Library and Student Learning Center at MUSC.

Former MUSC President James B. Edwards, DMD, will preside over the dedication ceremony. The library was made possible through the generous contributions of many individuals to the Will Hagood Memorial Fund established in the PA program, CHP, in June 1999.

William (Will) Milliken Hagood IV died on May 26, 1999, while kayaking with friends on the Tuolumne River in California in whitewater rapids known as Clavey Falls. Hagood entered the PA program at MUSC in May 1995.  Prior to that time he traveled the world.

Hagood was a river guide on the Chattooga River in South Carolina and the Zambezi River in Zambia, Africa. He traveled and worked in Nepal, New Zealand, Canada and on a fishing boat in Alaska. While in Nepal he trekked from Katmandu to the base camp at Mt. Everest.

Hagood spent 27 months in the PA program at MUSC and was proud to make the dean’s list during his clinical year. Upon graduation and certification, he moved to the mountains of Utah and accepted a job as a PA in a pediatric clinic known as Wee Care Pediatrics.

He was happy, loved his work and was loved by his colleagues and patients. The Will Hagood Memorial Fund has been established in the PA program at MUSC primarily as a result of the generosity of Billy and Beth Hagood, his parents.

The fund has been used initially to create this learning center for the PA students. The primary purpose of the fund will always be PA education.
