PBS special to feature MUSC professorA PBS special entitled “Life’s Little Questions II” will feature Ron Turner, M.D., head of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. The program will air at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30 on WITV Ch. 7 in Charleston. The program is part of the Scientific American Frontiers series with Alan Alda. Alda and a PBS crew was in Charleston in November 1999 to video Turner and his clinical trial team. The section of the program featuring Turner asks why in a time of great
technological advances can’t scientists cure the common cold. It discusses
the standard answer that there are myriad viruses that cause cold-like
symptoms, but goes into other issues in an interview with Turner.
Turner explains why it is so difficult to design clinical trials of so-called
anti-cold medications —and why we should be skeptical of over-the-counter
remedies.
