George delivers first Samuel B. Guze lecture in St. Louis

Mark S. George, M.D., MUSC distinguished professor of psychiatry, radiology and neurology, delivered the  Samuel B. Guze lecture Nov. 6, at Washington University in St. Louis. The lecture is expected to be an annual event.

The title of George’s talk was “A New Age in Neuropsychiatry—Minimally Invasive Brain Stimulation Therapies That Build on Functional Neuroimaging Findings of Pathological Circuits.”

Dr. Guze, who died in July, 2000, was the Spencer T. Olin Professor of Psychiatry and former head of psychiatry and vice chancellor for medical affairs at Washington University. Dr. Guze had been an admirer of George’s new approaches to brain disorders.

George is also the director of the Center for Advanced Imaging Research and the Brain Stimulation Laboratory in psychiatry. He and his MUSC colleagues have pioneered the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation and vagus nerve stimulation as therapies, and have shown how to combine them with functional brain imaging to understand their brain effects.
