Dear MUSC, MUHA, UMA, CFC Family Member:Soon you will receive materials regarding the 2001 Trident United Way Campaign and how you can personally help solve our community’s most pressing and persistent problems. We are writing you in advance to urge you to read the materials and consider them carefully.United Way is the largest supporter of health and human services after the government. Locally, 52 Trident United Way agencies fund programs that nurture children and youth, increase self-sufficiency, promote health and healing, support older people and strengthen families. Two of those programs are the Medical University’s very own: Reach Out and Read and the School Based Clinic at Rivers Middle School. The bulk of the United Way's work takes place on somewhat quiet yet profoundly meaningful level: making sure an elderly woman enjoys a hot meal, for example, or making sure a child has a safe place to go after school. However, when disaster strikes, as it did on September 11, the agency rises to the occasion, providing those affected with the food, clothing, shelter and counseling services needed to rebuild their lives. As one of the largest employers in the Charleston area, the Medical University and its employees can have a significant impact on the services the United Way is able to provide this coming year. We hope that you will join us and your fellow MUSC/MUHA/UMA/CFC employees in making an investment in our community and future. Pride in our University and fellow employees is reaffirmed every time we extend ourselves to meet our responsibilities to our fellow Lowcountry residents. Thanks for all you do on behalf of our community. With best personal regards, Raymond S. Greenberg, MD, PhD
