MUSC lists events for February
Michelle
Bowman, Department of Radiation Oncology, registers for the Lose to Win
contest. Individuals weighed in Jan. 16 for the six week program. Lose
to Win participants losing six pounds between now and Feb. 27 will be eligible
for cash prize drawings. Assisting Bowman with her sign-in is Holley Johnson,
left, and Purvi Shah, dietetic interns. Lose to Win is sponsored by the
MUSC Dietetic Internship program.
Team MUSC has compiled a list of activities and events that contribute
to employee wellness. Following is that list:
Chef’s Choice Cooking Class—Heart Healthy Cuisine:
1 - 5 p.m. Feb. 9, Johnson and Wales. Fee is $50.

This class will show participants cutting edge approaches to nutritious
cooking, emphasizing the use of primary cooking techniques. To register,
call 727-3036.
Know Your Risk for Heart Disease:
6:30 - 8 p.m. Feb. 11, MUSC Wellness Center Auditorium. Free.

James C. Thomas, M.D., director of the MUSC Cholesterol Clinic, will
discuss the risk factors you need to know about and the steps to take to
prevent a heart problem before it starts. To register, call 792-1616.
Heart Risk Screenings: Cost
is $10 and registration is required by calling 792-1616.

Prevent heart problems before they occur by getting a heart risk
screening. This includes a cholesterol check with lipid profile (LDL, HDL,
triglycerides) and blood glucose, blood pressure and body mass index check.
Once you complete these checks, your results will be used to complete a
computerized heart risk assessment. This will give you information about
the risk factors for heart disease that you need to control. Each
participant will receive a 12 Months to a Healthier Heart Tracking Chart
and a new Care for Your Heart Nutrition Guide booklet.
Getting Started: Making Heart-Healthy Habits

Learn the secrets of getting off to a good start. MUSC behavioral
psychologist, Peter Miller, Ph.D., will provide you with a step-by-step
plan of action designed to make your new habits as routine and familiar
as the old ones. Miller is the founder of the Hilton Head Health Institute
and author of numerous best-selling books on behavior and weight control.

American Heart Association Eating Plan:

MUSC registered dietitian, Sara Gassaway, will give you a step-by-step
overview of the American Heart Association Eating Plan—including food group
and portion recommendations, tips for controlling fat and sodium intake,
