Letters to Dr. Ray Greenberg, MUSC staff

Since becoming president, I (we) have received many letters commending our faculty and staff for outstanding patient care. These letters, or excerpts from letters, from patients and their families provide ample evidence of their high regard for our clinical services. I am pleased to share some of them with you, and recognize those who are providing skilled and compassionate care.

Dear Chaplain (Terry) Wilson:
As director of community outreach at the College of Charleston, I am often called on to make calls to parents concerning their sons and daughters. In many cases a student may be injured, in trouble or even dead. I know the skill required to make such a call well.

One of your chaplains, Chaplain Clegg Taylor called the parents of a female student when she was admitted to MUSC after sustaining a neck injury. Even though when admitted the prognosis was uncertain, Chaplain Taylor delivered the message with a degree of empathy and support that sustained these parents until they could arrive and see their daughter for themselves. The parents shared with me the experience they had. They kept emphasizing how Chaplain Taylor had supported them in their time of need.

Thanks be to God, she is doing very well indeed. The parents and I thank you for having such a dedicated and professional staff who make jobs like mine so much easier.

Dear Sarah King:
I cannot thank you and all the staff at MUSC for the excellent help and support you gave my wife during her surgery and recovery.

It appears that MUSC is well on its way to becoming the leading cancer medical center in this region. I am confident that it is in large measure to the superb staff that you have.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
I recently had my first experience with MUSC and wanted to let you know my impression. Having had rather unpleasant experiences in the past with overworked, underappreciated staff at other large institutions, I expected much the same at MUSC. I was very pleasantly surprised.

From my first appointment at the Hollings Cancer Center with Dr. Terry Day and his very capable staff and residents, through the pre-op experience at Rutledge Tower, and then surgery and post-op, I was repeatedly impressed with the pleasant and professional attitude of the staff.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
I was a patient under the care of Dr. David E. Soper and I can't tell you how much I appreciated his caring, patient attitude; he is an excellent doctor and should be commended for his high quality range of skills, from complicated detailed surgery, to his calm bedside manner.

I would also like to applaud his outstanding staff of professionals including Dr. Deanna Vroman, office coordinator Tricia, staffers Bette, Brenda, Doris, Kelly, Marcia, Mary, Mona and Pat and financial aid coordinator Agnes.

Dear Dr. Ray Greenberg:
I would like to bring your attention to the exceptional and professional service I received at the MUSC Bone and Joint Center by Donna Bradham. Donna was very accessible, cooperative, absolutely professional and completely devoted to patient care with attention to every detail. Dr. Del Schutte, Donna and your very competent student interns went out of their way to provide me with superb service, delivered me in a caring and comforting atmosphere before and after my surgery. This is a real testament to the teaching skills and extraordinary team Dr. Schutte has assembled.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
I recently visited the MUSC Prenatal Wellness Center on St. Andrews Boulevard. The staff was extremely professional and friendly. Sally Shields, our genetic counselor, was informative and followed up with test results in a timely fashion, which we appreciated. Dr. Kate Menard performed the amniocentesis in a quick and painless fashion. Lana Reilly, the ultrasound nurse, was also wonderful. MUSC is lucky to have such wonderful and professional people on its staff and I wanted to take a moment and thank them for working with us.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
My wife and I were on the way to Charleston to visit our daughter, who is a student. While on the way down, we received a call on our cell phone from MUSC employee,  John Warsham. He had found a cell phone in the street near the hospital and was able to charge it up to find out the stored numbers. By making a few phone calls to those numbers, he discovered that it was my daughter's phone. He was truly concerned about her safety, since he found it in the street. Our concern for her safety rose because she was suppose to be in class and we could not get in touch with her. Once in touch with our daughter, we arranged to meet him and pick up the phone and thank him for his actions. Once again, thank you Mr. Warsham.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
The eighth floor oncology house staffs were outstanding in dealing with my mother, who had to be at MUSC during July and August. Each attending, resident, and student provided my mother with professional care that is the hallmark of a great institution. It is well known and understood that physicians provide the direction but it is the nurses on the floor who actually care for the patient. The nurses at MUSC are the best that I have witnessed. I would like to commend Alice, Tricia, Mike, Jeanette, Katy and Cory. I also want to commend Dr. Carol Sherman and her staff at Hollings Cancer Center.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
I wanted to take this opportunity to compliment you on your outstanding operation. My son is being treated by the Craniofacial/Cleft palate team clinic at MUSC and I am thoroughly impressed from every aspect of the operation, from scheduling to each specialist.

Your operational staff has set a refreshing benchmark that other medical facilities could benefit by replicating.

Dear Sterling Hannah:
I have just returned home after spending a weekend at Camp Bluebird (a unique camp for adults with cancer sponsored by the Hollings Cancer Center), and I had to let you know how much it meant to me.

I went to camp not knowing what to expect, but hoping it would help me learn how to deal with what was going on in my life at present. After having breast cancer surgery and going through chemo, I was physically and mentally depressed.

The setting at  Camp Bluebird is beautiful and restful, the staff and volunteers caring and understanding, and the activities were fun. As I talked with the other cancer survivors, I realized that cancer is not the end of the road, but only part of it, a stop along the way, one that can make us stronger for the rest of the journey. Thank you for providing cancer survivors such a place as Camp Bluebird.
