Senate
accepting ballots for elections through June 16
Report from the Faculty Senate chair, Anne Osborne Kilpatrick.
The minutes of the May meeting were approved and are posted on the
Senate Web page.
The following reports were presented at the Faculty Senate meeting:
Governance Committee—Francine Margolius, chair (reported by
Senate chair)
-
Faculty Handbook: The faculty handbook has been edited to remove errors
and incorporate all previously board approved policies. This will be distributed
to the Board of Trustees in early July for review prior to the August meeting.
-
Elections are being held now: members will overlap during the summer, and
new senator orientation will take place in late August or early September.
To cast their ballots, faculty need to go to http://www2.edserv.musc.edu/facsen/election.las
no later than June 16.
Faculty Affairs Committee—Subbi Mathur, chair.
The Tenure and Mentoring workshop was a success, with more than 80
people attending at least part of the session.
Proceedings and the summary of remarks of speakers will be posted on
the Faculty Senate home page, as well as tenure criteria for each college.
A number of suggestions were received from attendees, including that the
session be held annually, as well as for new faculty.
Additionally, the committee is planning to conduct a faculty survey
to identify the extent of faculty mentoring and how faculty are being mentored
at present.
Congratulations to Mathur and her committee on a job well done, and
thanks to the Office of the Provost on its support.
University Affairs Committee—Mary Mauldin, chair.
The committee will conduct a survey of faculty regarding information
technology services. They have discussed the resources with various persons
within the university, but need to identify specific issues affecting our
faculty and their information and technology needs.
Gender Equity committee—Kit Simpson chair
Presently, members are reviewing data comparing compensation
and numbers of faculty at each rank by race and gender. More comprehensive
information is needed, which will benefit both the Gender Equity Committee,
and the Academic Affairs Committee deliberations. Efforts will be made
to obtain this information.
Academic Affairs Committee—Philippe Arnaud, chair.
They are working on compensation equity issues, and the faculty salary
increase policy. A committee meeting will be held this week.
-
Ad hoc committee on indirect costs report—Eberhard Voit, chair. Philippe
Arnaud reported that the committee has met, and is reviewing the policies
on indirect cost distributions.
-
Arts and Digital Imaging Status Report—Carlos Salinas, Chair. Subbi Mathur
reported that two consultants retained to review the future of this department
had identified the same recommendations presented by our ad hoc committee.
Discussion reinforced the need to address the central services a university
should provide to all units within the institution.
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 9.
