elects officers, welcomes members
Donald Johnson II, M.D., of Isle of Palms was named unanimously as chairman
of the MUSC Board of Trustees Aug. 9 at its regularly scheduled meeting.
An orthopaedic surgeon at the Carolina Spine Institute, Johnson
has been on the board of the MedicalUniversity since 1994 and is the former
medical director of rehabilitative services at Bon-Secours-St. Francis
Xavier Hospital. He replaces Conyers O'Bryan, M.D., a trustee from Florence,
as chair.
Cotesworth P. Fishburne Jr., DDS, of Rock Hill has been elected vice-chair
of the MUSC Board of Trustees. The election was held at the board’s regularly
scheduled meeting on Aug. 9.
Fishburne has practiced general dentistry in Rock Hill since 1965 and
has served on the MUSC Board of Trustees since 1988.
A fellow in the International College of Dentists, Fishburne is also
a fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry and past state president of
the S.C. Academy of General Dentistry. He is a former member of the Board
of Governors of the S.C. Dental Association and past president of the Tri-County
Dental Society and the Central District Dental Society.
A graduate of Wofford College, Fishburne graduated from dental school
at the Medical College of Virginia just prior to the opening of South Carolina’s
only dental school at MUSC. After completing dental school, Fishburne served
as a captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps.
James E. Wiseman Jr., DMD, a retired dentist from Prosperity, has been
elected to the Medical University of South Carolina Board of Trustees and
attended his first meeting August 9.
Wiseman served on the Newberry City Council from 1991 to 2000. A recipient
of the Order of the Palmetto, Wiseman received the Governor’s Rural Summit
Award. He chairs the Newberry Opera House Foundation and serves on the
Board of Directors of Newberry Federal Savings Bank.
Wiseman is past president of the Central District Dental Society and
past president of the S.C. Academy of Practice Administration, Academy
of Dentist International. He has also served as district chairman
of the Boy Scouts of America (Blue Ridge) and president of the Newberry
Jaycees.
A graduate of the University of South Carolina, Wiseman received his
DMD degree from the University of Louisville.
Charlie Appleby of Florence has been elected to the Medical University
of South Carolina Board of Trustees and attended his first meeting Aug.
9.
A recipient of the Order of the Palmetto, Appleby has been named to
Who’s Who in the United States and Who’s Who in National Politics.
He served on the National Advisory Council of Small Business Administration
during the Reagan and first Bush administrations and served as chairman
of the Governor’s Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Advisory
Council in S.C.
He also served on the S.C. Board of Pharmacy, the Florence Housing
Authority and the S.C. Aeronautics Commission.
Appleby has served as state vice president of the South Carolina Jaycees
and district governor and Florence president of the Lions Club. In addition
he has served on the executive board of the Pee Dee Area Council of the
Boy Scouts of America and is a recipient of its Silver Beaver Award.
A World War II Navy veteran, Appleby participated in the first wave
on D-Day.
