Faculty nominations needed for scholars program Nominations are being requested for faculty for the Presidential Scholars for the 2003-2004 Program from the College of Nursing and the College of Dental Medicine.  One faculty member from each of these colleges will be selected to join current faculty from the other colleges. Faculty will serve for three years. Presidential Scholars Program Goals: To help students: Engage in an challenging and provocative dialogue on issues related to health care  Develop appreciation for other disciplines  Understand the impact of interdisciplinary cooperation on patient care Appreciate the complexities of difficult human and social issues Gain greater insight into the nature of ongoing change in health care Understand and appreciate divergent views  Heighten awareness of their own values in the context of their professional responsibilities  Learn to use new ideas and sources of knowledge to establish creative lifelong learning patterns Faculty Responsibilities 1. Advise on the content and activities of the program, including curriculum, evaluation, and student selection; 2. Facilitate interdisciplinary group activities, including attending meetings with student groups, advising on resources, preparing interim and final group presentations, and evaluating the team skills of their group members; 3. Plan the content component of at least one evening session, in collaboration with other faculty scholars; 4. Serve on and attend advisory committee meetings, conduct focus group meetings, attend informational sessions, and attend all scholars’ events and activities. Scholars meetings are monthly from 5-8 p.m. from August through April; 5. Participate in ongoing Web-based discussions;  6. Engage in formative and summative evaluation and related scholarly activities. Characteristics of Faculty Scholars 1. Interest in interdisciplinary education and broad issues transcending professional boundaries; 2. Demonstrated ability to relate well to students and facilitate student led group learning; 3. Demonstrated interest in and experiences related to the goals of the scholars program; 4. Ability to fulfill the requirements of the program. Nomination Process 1. Faculty may self-nominate or be nominated by current or past presidential scholars, scholars faculty, or deans. Nomination deadline: Feb. 21. 2. Nominated faculty will be notified and asked to submit CV, statement of interest, and support letter from a current or past scholar, scholar faculty, or dean. Application deadline: March 15. 3. A committee of current Presidential Scholar Faculty and students will review the applications and the selection made by April 15. Description of Application Materials Faculty statement of interest should not exceed one page; 8.5’’ x 11,’’ font size 10 or higher and include the reasons for wanting to be involved in the program and any special experiences that may uniquely qualify them. Support letters should comment on the nominee’s interest in the program and unique accomplishments and personal characteristics that address the desired characteristics of a faculty scholar.   2003-04 Presidential Scholars Faculty  Nomination/Application Form Note:  Nomination deadline is Feb. 21.
