Ambulatory Care team wins second quarter blood drive

Teamwork was the name of the game as Ambulatory CARES stomped the competition in the second quarter of the hospitalwide “Nectar of Life” Blood Donation Competition.

The Ambulatory Care team won first place in the blood donation competition. The team donated 42 units of blood.

With 42 units donated, Mary Elizabeth Canaday, clinical educator for ambulatory care, and Susan Hamner, ambulatory care staff educator, led their team to victory over first quarter winners, the Cannon St. Blood Clots.

The winners will receive compli-mentary tickets to a Lowgators basketball game, Charleston’s newest addition to the sports arena, on Feb. 15. A bonus for all MUSC employees will materialize in the form of discounted tickets for the same game.

Add to that a rousing pre-game basketball demonstration pitting Ambulatory Cares team members versus a team compiled of members from other donor teams, and the night promises amusement and fun.

Annie Lovering, Red Cross, commended the winners and recognized everyone involved in the competition for an outstanding increase over last year’s corresponding donations for first and second quarters. Last year’s numbers were 263 and 187 donors for the first and second quarter- this year’s 496 and 406 donors trampled those figures.

While the numbers are up, Lovering made a hospitalwide appeal to “keep the blood pumping,” as the number of donors has fallen from first to the second quarter of the competition. In order to recruit more donors at MUSC, Lovering is offering a small prize to all returning donors who bring in or encourage first-time donors.

Teams for the competition may have up to 25 members. Quarterly results and other announcements pertaining to the competition may be found on the “Nectar of Life” bulletin board outside the cafeteria.

To schedule an appointment call 792-1015 or Health Connection at 792-1414.
The Donor Room hours are  from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays,  and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays.
