Letters of gratitude to Dr. Ray Greenberg, MUSC staff

Since becoming president, I (we) have received many letters commending our faculty and staff for outstanding patient care.

These letters, or excerpts from letters, from patients and their families provide ample evidence of their high regard for our clinical services. I am pleased to share some of them with you, and recognize those who are providing skilled and compassionate care.

Dear Sir:
In 1938, my parents were told that I would be deaf in two years. They set about finding a teacher for lip reading so I would be able to survive in this world. We went to class for two years, the hearing never disappeared, but it gradually got worse. At the age of 21, 33, 55 and 68, I was told nothing could be done to repair the hearing. My last chance was Dr. (Paul) Lambert at MUSC.

Dr. Lambert gave me some hope after the examination. One percent chance I would be deaf, 30 percent chance there would be no change and best of all a 75 percent he could help me. I told him let's go for it.

I can hear better than I could when I was 4 years old. Thanks to a surgeon who believed.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and received treatment through Hollings Cancer Center at MUSC.

My primary physician is Dr. David Garr at UMA Family Medicine. After ordering my routine mammography and getting the results, he advised me to go on for further testing. Through all of this, Dr. Garr kept in touch with me and was very supportive.

The surgery was performed by Dr. William Gillanders. At my pre-op visit and exam, Dr. Gillanders advised me of an innovative radiation procedure, which he was hopeful that I would qualify for and on that very same day referred me to Dr. Joseph Jenrette at Radiation Oncology. Dr. Jenrette was not in that week, so I was seen by his associate Dr. S. Eric Olyejar. Dr. Olyejar thoroughly explained to me the brachytherapy form of radiation treatment.

Throughout all of this time, I was overwhelmed by the kindness, professionalism and the gentle manner in which I was handled. I am very grateful to Drs. Garr, Gillanders, Jenrette and Olyejar. They all made a very lasting impression on me and my family. We are very fortunate in have these professionals at MUSC and the treatments I am receiving for this illness.

Dr. L. Lyndon Key:
Recently I had the pleasure to work with one of your attendings, Dr. (Trish) McBurney, who was an invaluable help with a patient of mine that I transferred to her care. Dr. McBurney and her staff were so helpful to a patient and her family, as well as keeping our office informed of the patient's status.

It is unfortunate that we see tertiary care centers being at times impersonal and negligent of the referring primary care provider's interest in the care of the patient. This was certainly not the case with the patient that Dr. McBurney and her staff took care of.

It is quite refreshing, as well as reassuring, to know that MUSC has caring, competent providers such as Dr. McBurney on staff. A heartfelt thanks for all the kind care provided.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
I few weeks ago, Dr. Nabil Bissada performed surgery on me to remove a kidney containing a significant malignancy.

Dr. Bissada's professional and efficient performance with the surgery resulted in a recovery that is nearly miraculous.

Also, a major contribution to my rapid recovery was the marvelous care provided by all the MUSC staff involved—from recovery room through discharge. I could not have possibly asked for anything more.

The number of visits by doctors, residents and interns to check on me was most impressive.

Dr. Greenberg, you should be very proud of the people at MUSC.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
I was picking up my husband from the hospital after having surgery and was involved in a car accident in the front of the hospital.

Nurse Sheila Bailey and Officer Gerald Crosby were so helpful and concerned. Officer Bailey assisted me in calling the police and tow truck. Ms. Bailey was waiting for me with my husband and helped me to calm down. Please extend my appreciation to both of them. They are an asset to your hospital.

Dear. Dr. Greenberg:
I would like to thank this opportunity to express how grateful and pleased I was with the treatment and concern shown to me during my recent eye surgeries at MUSC. I truly believe this is one of the finest clinics anywhere.

The staff, including Dr. Kerry Solomon and his associates, Krisse Drentlaw, Dr. Jennifer Merritt, Terry MacBain, Dr. Arman Farr, Johanna Gehlken, and LaShawn Turner, demonstrated superior talent and dedication.

I had a very complex problem that had baffled ophthalmologists for several years. Dr. Solomon quickly diagnosed my problem, and I am now able to continue my career in teaching and music.

Dear. Dr. Greenberg:
I am writing to tell you how favorably impressed I was by Dr. Mark Lyles and the staff involved in the Executive Health Program. From the time I arrived and was met in the lobby of the hospital by Dr. Lyles to the exit interview after all the tests had been evaluated I was confident that my health tests were the most important issues on the minds of the staff involved with me at that particular moment.

There was virtually no time wasted waiting for staff to begin the required services. The radiologists gave me their undivided attention, explained vague shadows, shared their concerns and joined Dr. Lyles in suggesting further procedures.

Jesse Stephenson and the remainder of the nurses were professional but managed to retain a sense of humor and light heartedness. The Executive Health Program is first rate.

Dear Penny Wallace:
How lucky you are! You have a wonderful team working in the Endrocrinology Department. I just finished the Ross Products Clinical Project and could not have been more impressed with those that “researched” me. Please pass on my gratitude to: Sara Shaughnessy, Debbie O'Rear, Ann King, Andra Risinger, and Kathy Bradbury.

Dear Dr. Greenberg:
My daughter caught her finger in the door of our beach house on Pawleys Island and had to be taken to MUSC. I believe my daughter was in the hands of three of the greatest physicians, Drs. Rebecca Reamey, Brady McCoy and William Yarbrough.

Before we made the drive to MUSC, a doctor told us that the distal tip was severed and could not be reattached, but I requested a surgeon and was instructed to drive to MUSC.

The doctors were able to reattached the tip and she is doing well. Thank you to the nurses that were attentive to our needs. I was so impressed with the gentleness, respect and courtesy they bestowed upon us.
