New Keane patcom system promises speedier service

by George Spain
CCIT Technical Publisher
New hardware for the massive Keane Patcom Plus health care administration system will deliver surprising speeds to its more than 500 users, according to CCIT’s Steven Brice-Nash, project testing coordinator.

In addition, the IBM RISC-based box to be installed during a marathon 22-hour downtime beginning just after midnight Friday, Jan. 24, will allow for future expansion including a Work Queue module that will reduce mounds of paperwork, Brice-Nash said.

Keane users will have to reboot their computers, change passwords (your old one should work, but you’ll have to re-enter it), and login (look for the login and password slots at the bottom of the screen instead of the top). Oh, one more thing, don’t try to run CQ (report writer) during the downtime. It won’t work and you’ll be disappointed.

Hint on the password: you must use six characters, one of which must be a number. But, the password can’t start with a number. No spaces or special characters are allowed and all letters should be in lower case.

The lengthy downtime is necessary to unload and reload the many pieces of database information that make up one of the largest systems on campus.

Apart from the dramatic speed difference, the upgrade is infrastructural, said Brice-Nash. “In order for us to take advantage of new modules like the Work Queue (which should be in place by early spring) we needed a more powerful processor.”

Work Queue will save time and paperwork by keeping track of the data from many users by tying the info to the user’s login and creating a “queue” of information.

The new box will be called Deep Blue; it replaces Sandpiper.
