Children's hospital names new administrator

MUSC named John M. Sanders administrator of the Children’s Hospital. Sanders, who has held the administrator’s position since August, is excited at the chance to serve in one of the nation’s premier children’s hospitals.

“This is a wonderful opportunity at an amazing institution,” he remarked.

“It is a true honor to have the confidence of this organization in leading the Children’s Hospital. The MUSC Children’s Hospital is a wonderful asset for the children of the Lowcountry. Having started my health administration career in Charleston, I am keenly aware that the hospital is a precious resource that must be carefully tended and preserved.”

Lyndon L. Key, M.D., chairman of pediatrics, said that the search committee interviewed several qualified candidates, but Sanders was the top choice.

“It was obvious that John was a true match,” Key said. “Everyone was extremely impressed with his strategic mindset and vision.”

“John’s experience as a health care administrator speaks for itself,” he added. “We are thrilled that he has accepted this position, and we look forward to benefiting from his guidance and leadership.”

Sanders began his health administration career at TriHealth in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he was director for perinatal services. He also held several management positions at MUSC from 1990 through 1994, following his completion of an administrative residency.

Prior to joining the MUSC Children’s Hospital, Sanders was associate administrator at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del. Sanders was responsible for the overall management of many areas, including surgery, medical imaging, therapy and rehabilitation, volunteer, child life, and facility and support services.

While at duPont Hospital, Sanders also redesigned several management structures to increase efficiency, quality, communication, and accountability. He created a service excellence department to coordinate all customer service initiatives for patients and their families.

Sanders is board certified in health care management and is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. He holds a master’s degree in health administration from MUSC.
