Darden named president of pediatric group

Paul Darden, M.D., MUSC professor of pediatrics, was named president of the Ambulatory Pediatric Association (APA) during the Pediatric Academic Societies Annual Meeting in May.

The APA represents general pediatrics, pediatric emergency medicine, developmental and behavioral pediatrics, adolescent medicine, child health research, pediatric medical education, and related disciplines.  The group promotes the professional growth of academic general pediatric health professionals.

Darden has served as APA's Regional Chair for Region VIII and was elected to the national office as the Communications Director serving from 1996-1999. As the Communications director, he was on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the APA. This position also included serving on the program committee for the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) meeting. He has served on the editorial board for the Journal Ambulatory Pediatrics since 1998. He is currently on the steering committee of Pediatric Research in Office Settings (PROS), the American Academy of Pediatrics practice-based research network, having started with PROS as the alternate coordinator from South Carolina in 1991. Other national associations include being a member in the Reviewer Reserve for the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, 1999-2001. 

Darden is the principal investigator for a grant project from the National Immunization Program, Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Evidence-based Immunization Delivery: Improvement though Education and Communication, which has resulted in TIDE (Teaching Immunization Delivery and Education). This is an online interactive provider education program developed with MUSC's Education Technology Lab. He is principal investigator for a Sub awards program from the CDC/Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine  for a national study, Addressing Racial Disparities in Immunization Delivery.
