More patients receiving care from PAsMembers of MUSC’s Physician Assistant program will join PAs around the nation on Oct. 6 in celebrating National Physician Assistant Day. On that day in 1967, the first class of PAs graduated from Duke University. In recognition of National PA Day, the PA program at MUSC will set up sites around Charleston to distribute health information and take blood pressures. Students will be set up at MUSC, College of Charleston, and the James Island WalMart from 10 a.m. to noon and from 2 to 4 p.m., Oct. 6. Physician assistants are licensed professionals who practice medicine under supervising physicians. PAs also provide patient care services that would otherwise be performed by physicians. As part of their comprehensive services, PAs take medical histories, perform physical examinations, order and interpret lab tests, diagnose and treat illnesses, suture lacerations, assist in surgery, and write prescriptions.
