Office of Diversity sponsors career day for middle schoolby Matthew DouglasPublic Relations The Office of Diversity held a career day for McClellanville Middle School students Feb. 6 and 7. Guest speakers from MUSC entertained questions from students about college goals and the health professions. Higher Education Awareness Program, known as HEAP sponsored the event. The program teaches students how to make professional choices and stresses “college pays.” MUSC retired faculty member Willie Glee stresses the importance of higher education during a career day at McClellanville Middle School. Speakers at the event covered a wide range of professional fields. The Colleges of Dental Medicine, Graduate Studies and Health Professionals were represented. Bryan Moten from the Center for Academic Excellence stressed to the 8th graders how important an education is. “Getting a strong educational background is the foundation for being successful in the working environment,” said Moten. HEAP pairs institutions of higher education with local middle schools in the area. “The goal is to make students aware of the opportunities they can gain from continuing their education,” said HEAP coordinator Angie Anderson. MUSC has been sponsoring HEAP events since 1995. Every year students come to MUSC, listen to various professionals talk about the importance of education and take a tour of the campus. “I think the students learned a lot from this year's event,” said Anderson.
