2003 Career Development Training 

Department of Human Resources Management 


The Department of Human Resources Management  announces the Career Development Training Schedule. 

An array of workshops and seminars to address individual professional development skills as well as support the accomplishment of departmental organizational goals will be offered.

The Department of Human Resources Management welcomes suggestions and special requests to meet specific departmental needs.

Basic ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 Coding 
Feb. 24 - April 16
These courses are designed to provide an introduction to the basic principles of ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 coding. The ICD-9-CM coding provides an introduction to the basic principles and guidelines for assigning diagnostic and inpatient procedure codes. If your office has a CPT-4 book and an ICD-9-CM book that you may borrow, bring them with you to the class. This is an eight-week class meeting  from 5 to 6 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday in room 803, Harborview Office Tower.
Fee: $60 per participant.

Basic Medical Terminology 
March 18 - April 24
The course is designed to give the student an overview of the basics of forming medical terms. An overview of the major body systems is provided with associated word parts. This is a six week class which meets from 5:15  - 6:15 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday in room 803, HOT
Fee: $60 per participant

University Purchasing Services
March 12 and Oct. 8
Learn how to use the purchasing system at MUSC to obtain what you need, when you need it, and at a competitive price while remaining in compliance with state laws and proper accounting procedures. You will learn what forms to use and how to complete them to avoid delayed or over due shipments. The class will meet from 9 a.m. to noon in room 803 HOT.

Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) 
March 27 and Sept. 24
Whom does this federal law protect? How does an employee qualify for protection under the FMLA Act? What are the obligations of managers/supervisors and employees? Does leave granted under FMLA run concurrently with existing leave programs such as sick/annual, holiday leave, workers' compensation, etc.? The answers to these questions and other “tricky” details about FMLA will be discussed during this  session held from 9 a.m. to noon in room 803 HOT.

Hiring The Right Person 
April 2, June 14, Sept. 3
This course provides the hiring official with essential building blocks for a good hiring decision. The objective of the course is to provide the hiring official with an overview of legal responsibilities, a demonstration of the behavioral interview technique, and a systematic approach for assessing applicant information. The course will be held from 9 a.m. to noon in room 803 HOT.

Employee Performance Management System (EPMS)
April 9, Aug. 13, and Nov. 5
Do you want to know how to properly use the EPMS form? Are your tired of Wondering who to call for information on EPMS? In this seminar, held from 9 a.m. to noon in room 803 HOT, you will learn how to use the EPMS to improve work performance and encourage the growth and development of your employees.

Planning for the Future—Retirement Overview 
May 30
 This seminar,  held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in room 125  Strom Thurmond, is an overview of all basic benefits important to know as you plan and prepare for retirement. Speakers from South Carolina Retirement System, South Carolina Deferred Compensation, Office of Insurance Services, Social Security Administration and local financial consultants will communicate the most current information regarding state retirement plan, health insurance vesting requirements, financial planning, and Social Security.  To register visit the Human Resources Management Training Web site at http://www.musc.edu/hrm/training. Pre-Retirement Preparation 
March 28, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., room 803, HOT;  June 25, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., room 125, Strom Thurmond
This session will assist you in making informed decisions as you prepare for the  future and transition into retirement. Speakers from the State Office of Insurance Services, South Carolina Retirement System and the Social Security Administration along with financial consultants will communicate retirement, insurance, financial and social security Medicare information.
