In the Pediatric Epidemiology Department, we had a chance to interview research analysts Linda Yeager and Melanie Floyd, and research administrator Myla Ebeling.

Both Yeager, a 13-year MUSC veteran, and Floyd, who's been with the university 11 years, use Omnivision to review normal newborn charts and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Charts.

They also use Patcom Plus to verify patient demographics. Eberling, who has been with MUSC 22 years, uses Patcom to research patient-based trend analyses.

Do you remember a time when the Omnivision made a difference in your practice?
“Since (we've received) Omnivision we don't have to wait on Medical Records to pull  charts to verify information. We can access them the day after a patient is discharged. Before, we got them a week later because of other requirements and physician signatures.”

If you could have any one enhancement to the EMR what would it be? How would it help you perform your work?
Yeager and Floyd ask for clearer pictures. “Handwriting is frequently difficult to read, especially after scanning them into the system. Some forms are too difficult to read as well because they have a dark background. In particular, forms transported from other hospitals.” Ebeling added, “That instead of just an image, information should be processed into the database.”
