Hudson to attend AMA Leadership Conference

Steve Hudson, M.D., J.D., first year resident in ophthalmology and South Carolina attorney, is one of 25 recipients of a leadership award recognizing young physicians across the country.

The American Medical Association Foundation Leadership Award encourages medical students, residents and young physicians to continue involvement in organized medicine and leadership development.

In the past 10 years, Hudson has managed to accomplish half of his life’s dream. As a young child, Hudson knew he wanted to be a doctor. After receiving his doctor of medicine from the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine at Bethesda, Md., Hudson went on to became a flight surgeon for the Presidential Helicopter Squadron in Quantico, Va., and he served under presidents Clinton and Bush. Now at the age of 34, not only is he a resident in ophthalmology, he strives for something beyond clinical medicine.

“This award is a unique opportunity for physicians interested in advocating for health policy issues,” said Hudson. “I want to develop my leadership skills and specifically advocate for the ethical treatment of residents and other physicians.”

Each award recipient will travel to Washington, D.C., and attend a four-day conference. During the experience, physicians gain leadership and public speaking skills. They are also given the opportunity to attend presentations given by prominent political, civic, and medical leaders and voice their issues to these individuals.

“The opportunity to learn from leaders in organized medicine and public service is invaluable,” said Hudson. “I am honored to be a part of this experience.”
