Shadow Day at MUSC

MUSC participated in Groundhog Shadowing Day on Jan. 31. This is the seventh year the university has been involved in this effort.

“MUSC is proud to be a part of this special day,” said Jane Locke, MUSC School-to-Career coordinator. “It gives students a glimpse of the real world of work in a chosen career and gives MUSC employees a chance to make a difference in a student’s life.”

Not only a morale booster for employees who want to positively impact the community, the shadowing day and other School-to-Career activities help students in the selection of a career and opens the door for future internships or job applications.

“When I was a high school student I had no idea what my interests were professionally,” said Terry Wilson, MUSC Chaplain. “The program allows students to experience something of what it’s like to be identified with a particular type of work. I wish I had the opportunity when I was in high school.”

“Each year that we’ve done this, it’s gotten better and more productive,” Locke said. “It really was a successful day for the students and the employees.”

One hundred students from the tri-county area participated including high schoolers from Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley counties, Columbia, Darlington, Orangeburg, Spartanburg, Florence, Greenville, and Hampton.

“Since MUSC has such diverse offerings in careers and is the largest employer in the area, it’s important that MUSC make shadowing opportunities available to high school students. We always have some students from across the state, which helps to reinforce MUSC’s reputation in South Carolina,” Locke said.

A diverse representation of health care professions were represented including transplant, anesthesia, trauma services, ambulatory OR, medical records, physical therapy, security and public safety, chaplain, genetics counseling, guest relations, clinical nursing, administration, CCIT, Meducare and transportation, pharmacy, OB/GYN, sports medicine, engineering, nutrition, diabetes, psychiatry, financial counseling, physician, nurse and research.
