Dental staff, students brush up on construction skillsThe MUSC School of Dental Medicine is sponsoring a Habitat for Humanity home as part of the Sea Islands Habitat for Humanity's 25th anniversary. The school's students, faculty and administrators who traded rubber gloves for work gloves, began building the home March 1. The school raised money for the home with a letter writing campaign to current students, faculty, alumni, staff and administration to raise the $45,000 needed for construction supplies. They hope to complete the home before the class of 2003 graduates. “We, the dental school, wanted to do this on our own. Never before have we felt such a wonderful sense of spirit, community, and muscle aches,” said Judy Acorn, dental assistant. The “MUSC Dental House” is one of 25 homes volunteers are building during the Sea Island Habitat's 25th anniversary. The students expect to conclude the project March 15. The group will also participate in a celebration with Millard Fuller,
founder and president of Habitat for Humanity International. Fuller is
known worldwide for his efforts to eliminate poverty housing through Habitat
for Humanity.
