Community comes together to bring Healthier Heart 2003

Cardiovasular disease s are the number one killer of Americans. 

The MUSC Heart and Vascular Center is working in partnership with community agenices to bring you 12 Months to a Healthier Heart 2003 —a year of screenings, online assessment tools, special events, classes and talks covering heart health, nutrition, stress management, behavior modification and fitness.

The site will provided information to: assess your heart health;  reduce your risk factors; exercise safely and effectively; increase leisure time; focus on healthy eating habits; learn to cook healthy meals; and reduce stress 

Take the first step. Learn about heart disease risk factors you may need to control by getting a heart risk screening, then check your progress at quarterly screenings throughout the year. Screenings include a cholesterol check with lipid profile (LDL, HDL, triglycerides) and blood glucose, blood pressure and body mass index check. Each participant will receive a 12 months to a Healthier Heart Membership Kit. 

The next quarterly heart screening will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., May 17, at the MUSC Wellness Center Auditorium, 45 Courtenay Drive. Free parking is available in the Wellness Center lot, and across the street at the corner of Bee and Courtenay. The cost is $10. Appointment required. To register call 792-1616 or register online.

April 22: Treatment Options for Chronic Sinusitis. Rodney Schlosser, M.D., with MUSC University ENT Associates, will discuss the latest treatments available for sinusitis sufferers. Two sessions will be offered—12 to 1 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m., East Cooper Regional Medical Center, 1st floor classroom.  To register call 792-1414 or register online. 

April 30: Eating to Fuel an Active Lifestyle. Learn how to eat to fuel fitness, including meal scheduling and what foods are best to eat before and after exercise.  MUSC dietician Sarah Schultz will show you how.  Earth Fare will provide tips for specific food items that support strength and energy. Includes an optional weigh-in from 6 to 6:30 p.m. and nutrition class from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. All monthly nutrition classes are free, and will be held at the MUSC Wellness Center Auditorium. May 6: Prevention and Treatment Strategies for Osteoporosis-Related Fractures. MUSC orthopaedic surgeon Langdon Hartsock, M.D., of the MUSC Bone and Joint Center, will discuss strategies for prevention and treatment of fractures caused by osteoporosis. This free talk will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. at Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community Blackmer Hall in the Commons Building. Bishop Gadsden is located at 1 Gadsden Way, James Island. May 13: Living Well, Living Longer with Congestive Heart Failure. MUSC cardiologist Naveen Pereira, M.D., will discuss ways to improve quality of life with congestive heart failure and give an update on the latest treatment options available. This free talk will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. at Cooper Hall Retirement Community classroom, 937 Bowman Road, Mount Pleasant. To register call 792-1616. 

May 22: Stress Can Break Your Heart. Mary Beth Brock, occupational therapist with the MUSC Institute of Psychiatry, will give you an overview of the damage stress can cause and offer step-by-step strategies for controlling the stress in your life. This free talk will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the MUSC Wellness Center Auditorium. Free parking is available. To register call 792-1616 or register online. 

May 28: Shake the Salt Habit. MUSC registered dietitian Audra Raus, will discuss helpful ways to reduce sodium intake including label reading and food preparation tips. Earth Fare will provide ideas for using herbs and spices to flavor foods and will share product samples. Includes an optional weigh-in from 6 to 6:30 p.m. and nutrition class from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Free parking is available. To register call 792-1616 or register online. 

Participants can join the 12 Months to a Healthier Heart program any time throughout the year, and do not have to be a program member to attend the talk.
