Charity Ball receives record number donations

The 2003 Charity Ball raised a record $25,108 for five local charities: Crisis Ministries, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Wellness House of Our Lady of Mercy, Hospice of Charleston, and the Lowcountry Children's Center.

Throughout December, January, and February, the 31 members of the Medical Student Alumni Council gathered goods, services, and gift certificates to be auctioned off during the evening.

MSAC collected more than 400 items, including Spoleto USA tickets, a stay at the Charleston Place Hotel, dinner at Magnolia's restaurant, a Wild Dunes Resort golf package, SCUBA diving lessons, an autographed New York Giants souvenir football, and a week-long stay at a beach house in Puerto Rico. Guests were able to peruse these donations during the new Silent Auction Preview held at 7 p.m. The evening ended with a Live Auction featuring an AKC registered yellow Labrador puppy.

Preston Wendell, Ann Harriott Fisher, and Michelle Buckler serve as MSAC co-chairs, and Peggy Singletary serves as MSAC advisor.

Committee’s role in planning Annual Charity Ball

The College of Medicine Student Council Charity Ball Committee is responsible for planning the event  while the Medical Student Alumni Council plans the Silent Auction.  Without the collaborative help of all members of these two student groups, the Charity Ball would not be possible.

The committee made all arrangements with the Charleston Convention Center, from planning the set-up of the ballrooms to deciding on the  menu.

Invitations and posters were designed to invite faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Music for the evening was a student jazz ensemble the first hour and the Mighty Kicks performed dancing music. Signs were hand-stenciled by committee members to welcome guests, thank donors and introduce the charities.

Merritt at James Island donated $1,000 to help cover the costs of the event.

The committee also received donations from the Charleston Convention Center, The Butterfly Flower Shop, Coca-Cola Consolidated, Forsberg’s Package Shop, Inc., In Good Taste, Martha’s Shop Inc., Med Deli, Nancy’s Exotic Plants, Snyder’s Party Rental and Southern Wine and Spirits.

To provide safe transportation for guests to and from the event, University Transportation shuttled guests between campus and the Convention Center. The MUSC President’s Office and the College of Medicine Dean’s Office donated money to cover these costs.  The committee also worked with Public Safety so that officers were present to ensure the safety of guests. The committee made arrangements with Classic Photography to take photos of guests during the evening.

The committee requested donations from The Butterfly Flower Shop and received a Victorian sunflower arrangement for the front entrance; Nancy’s Exotic Plants provided greenery, and  Snyder’s Party Rentals loaned a red carpet to welcome guests. Finally, when the doors opened to the 16th Annual Charity Ball, the COM Student Council was there welcoming guests.

Catherine Hunter and Kevin Ginn serve as COMSC Charity Ball Committee Co-Chairs and Tanya Becvinovski serves as COMSC advisor.
