MUSC physical therapy students in national spotlight

by Lisa Saladin and Ruth Hardy
Department of Rehabilitation Sciences
Three College of Health Professions physical therapy students have been selected to receive national student award scholarships from the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).

Adam Smith works on Betty Box, College of Health Professions.

Adam Smith, a third year student, was notified that he will receive the Mary McMillan Scholarship. It is the highest honor awarded by the APTA to graduating physical therapy students. The award is based on academic excellence and the demonstrated potential to make significant contributions to the profession of physical therapy.

Each physical therapy program can nominate one student and a few are selected from more than 150 physical therapy programs across the country. Adam was also elected as President of the National Student Assembly of the APTA this past  fall.

Tyrone Frasier
Tyrone Frasier and Dana Price received notification that they are  recipients of the APTA Minority Award for Academic Excellence. This is based on academic and clinical performance with an emphasis on community service and minority health service. Frasier and Price's service to the CHP Association for Black Health Professionals was a deciding factor for this award. Once again a few students are selected to receive this award nationally.

Dana Price, left, with PT alumnus A.D. Harrison at the Autumn Gala this fall.

The students will be honored at an awards dinner and ceremony at the APTA Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.,  in June.

“Adam, Tyrone and Dana are certainly deserving and really representative of many of our outstanding students in all our programs” said College of Health Professions Dean Danielle Ripich, Ph.D.
