Fourth Trinh sister graduates, joins family alumni

The College of Dental Medicine Class of 2003 honors several students of Vietnamese descent. Graduating student Camhuong Trinh is the last of four sisters to graduate with degrees from MUSC.

Camhuong or “Cam” is the seventh of nine brothers and sisters who fled Vietnam to settle in the United States in 1990.

Sisters Lan, Cam, Le Huyen, Thu during Cam's 1996 College of Charleston graduation.

When the Trinh family began settling in Spartanburg  in the late 1980s,  little did anyone know that their dreams would take all of them so far. Many of her siblings chose the medical field for their professions.

Her older sister, Lan, was the first to receive her degree from the College of Nursing in 1993.  Two years later, Thu graduated from the College of Medicine in 1995, while younger sister, Le Huyen, received her pharmacy doctorate in 2002. An older brother, Thai, is a physician and graduate of the University of South Carolina’s School of Medicine.

“They have been my role models, my inspiration,” said Cam. “Growing up, I’ve watched them in their successes and struggles in school and learning English. Seeing them achieve helped me feel that I can do it too.”

Following graduation, Cam is preparing to take her North Carolina dental boards and hopes to open a private practice.
