Radiology employee known as dedicated, loyal

Juanita C. (Nita) Landreth, who for 25 years served as secretary for Stephen Schabel, M.D., Depart-ment of Radiology,  died May 19 in a house fire.

Nita was born in Atlanta, Ga., on May 20, 1937. She was the daughter of Collier B. Ray and Mary Parks Moore Ray.

The widow of Walter Lamar Landreth, she is survived by two sons, Robert Howard Landreth of Knightsville, N.C., and Richard Lamar Landreth of Ladson, a brother, Howard Thomas Ray of Charleston, and a sister, Alice Faye Ray Hall of North Charleston, S.C.

Her funeral and memorial services were held May 23 in North Charleston at the United Methodist Church. She was laid to rest in Carolina Memorial Gardens.

“Nita was a wonderful, loving person. She would help anyone if she could. We would always make jokes with Nita because she always had something going on at home. She was the backbone of her family and took care of them. She was very spunky. The office will never be the same, day after day looking at her empty desk. I will miss her sitting right behind me.”
—Felecia Windham Bostick, Administrative Assistant, Department of Radiology

“I knew Nita for over 22 years. She was always like a mother figure to me. Her strong sense of family reminded me of my days growing up. I sought her opinion on many occasions when it pertained to work related issues. Nita will be missed dearly.”
—Deborah Sampson Williams, Administrative Assistant, Department of Radiology

“I have worked with Nita for the 27 years she was in the department.  We shared an office the first 14 years and then our jobs separated us into different areas of the department.  Nita always told everyone I was the daughter she never had.  She was there when I married, there to help after the birth of my son 19 years ago and most recently there for me during my last bout with cancer. She was always there when anyone needed her.  Nita knew no strangers. She made herself a part of everyone's family and was loved by many.  She was a caring and giving person and will be missed by many.
—Susie Hall, Radiology

“Nita was a phenomenally dedicated and loyal person to me, the radiology department and MUSC. For almost 30 years she was the person that made my office run. Physicians, medical students, journal offices, residents, and lawyers all over the state knew Nita and they all loved her. For eight years she made every Board of Medical Examiners function in the Lowcountry a success. She helped almost every medical student who went into radiology for the last 28 years. Her hard work and diligence were a major reason for my success at MUSC. She cannot be replaced and we will miss her.”
—Dr. Stephen Schabel, Department of Radiology
