MUSC hosts State Facilities Conference

Three organizations teamed up April 25 to hold the 2003 State Facilities Conference here at MUSC.

Representatives from ASPACO (Association of State Planning and Construction Offices), ASCEM (Association of South Carolina Energy Managers), and SCAPPA (South Carolina Association of Physical Plant Administrators) came from throughout the state to attend the experience exchange and participate in technical seminars related to construction, energy, maintenance, facilities, and management issues.

“Bringing these three groups together for an annual meeting created great synergy and was a first,” said John Sutusky, Ph.D., MUSC Finance and Administration vice president. “Participants were extremely complimentary of the conference.”

Credit for pulling the event together goes to John Malmrose, ASPACO president and MUSC Engineering and Facilities chief.

“The goal of the conference is always to take away new concepts and ideas,” said Tanis Manseau, facilities operation director. “It’s like continuing education for facilities management and physical plant.”

Having the conference at MUSC gave the university’s physical plant and management teams an opportunity to shine as examples to managers from the entire state.

Conference participants were invited to attend a showing of a movie in MUSC’s new theater, built for presentation and viewing purposes. They also toured MUSC facilities, including several massive projects under construction.

Other state projects filled the agenda as well, like the roof construction of the Littlejohn Coliseum in Clemson. Conference topics ranged from round table discussions on custodial issues to an overview of the MUSC construction master plan for current projects and future facilities.

A highlight from the three-day event included an address by Sen. Glenn McConnell concerning construction requirements for the new Hunley Museum.
