ADA honors Buse
Maria Buse, M.D., professor of medicine and biochemistry, was presented the American Diabetes Association Albert Renold Award on June 16 at the 63rd Annual Meeting and Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association in New Orleans.The Albert Renold Award is named for Professor Renold, renowned diabet-ologist and researcher.
The
award is given to an individual whose career is distinguished by outstanding
achievements in the training of diabetes research scientists or the facilitation
of diabetes research by diabetes investigators.
A member of the MUSC faculty since 1957, Buse has dedicated her scientific career to increasing the understanding of the biochemistry involved in diabetes. Now in its 44th year, her basic research grant “Factors that Modify Insulin Action,” is one of the longest continuously-funded National Institutes of Health grants in the entire nation.
Additionally, Buse was recently honored by the Medical University with the university’s highest academic designation, a Distinguished University Professor. She is the first woman in MUSC’s 179-year history to receive this honor, which will be officially presented to her at the Faculty Convocation Aug. 26.
The award is given annually to faculty members who achieve unique and
exemplary levels of excellence in university service during their academic
careers.
