MUSC pediatric endocrinology team goes camping

by Suzanne Runtz and Jonathan Planton
Pediatric Endocrinology
For 36 years, Camp Adam Fisher has given children with diabetes a summer camp experience that they would otherwise miss.

While many summer camps do not accept children with diabetes, Camp Adam Fisher in Summerton is designed specifically for children with diabetes, ages 7 to 17. At the camp, they learn to manage their diabetes while interacting with other children who share the same struggles.

Many of the camp’s volunteers come from MUSC, donating their time to provide the children with a safe, exciting, and educational environment. Counselors are trained to do blood sugar checks, physicians regulate each child’s insulin dosage, and dietitians ensure that each camper receives the proper diet.  More important, all of the volunteers ensure that the children have fun.

Activities at Camp Adam Fisher include kayaking, horseback riding, swimming, and boat rides.  Evening events such as carnivals, water olympics, and dances are also designed to bring the campers together.  At the end of the day, the children gather around a campfire for vespers, a quiet time when they can reflect on each day’s activities and experiences.

With the help of Camp Adam Fisher, the children learn to laugh, share, and care for one another. Camp Adam Fisher is held each year during the first week of June at Clemson University’s Bob Cooper Leadership Center in Summerton, S.C.
