Currents

To Medical Center Employees:
Medical Center-wide goals for Fiscal Year 2003-2004 will, for the most part, be a continuation of ongoing initiatives. I ask that the management team and all concerned staff keep the relevant Medical Center-wide goals in mind as you prepare your departments for the new fiscal year.

Preparation for the phase I replacement hospital will continue to require a great deal of time and attention. We will need to define and achieve financial targets necessary for funding the new facility. We will also need to finalize the design.

During the new year, several capital projects for our current facilities are scheduled for completion. This includes completion of projects for the Clinical Sciences Building and Pediatric Emergency Room, completion of necessary construction and installation of Neuro Interventional equipment on the third floor of the Main Hospital, and modernization of 16 hospital elevators. For Rutledge Tower, we plan to complete construction and installation of an MRI and consolidate cardiology outpatient services. In the Main Hospital construction will begin on 6 SW ICU and planning for PCICU on the fourth floor should be completed.

The JCAHO survey is expected in November. All preparations need to be made to achieve successful survey results.

Patient safety will continue to be a high priority. Also, we expect to develop improved methods to monitor and measure quality and business operations.

A new “nuts and bolts” two-year tactical plan will be prepared. A number of work groups will be appointed to develop the plan. We will use ideas and recommendations brought forward during the customer service (“first impressions”) training sessions, the March 2003 management retreat and guidance from various existing committees.

Identification of cost savings opportunities, compliance and HIPAA training will continue to be high priorities in FY 2003-2004. We will also remain focused upon measuring patient and employee satisfaction and in communicating this information.

The above highlights a number of substantive goals but is not all inclusive.  Most importantly, our goal will be to continue to fulfill our mission by providing high quality and compassionate care and excellent customer service.

Thank you very much.

STAR Productions presents ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’

Lois Kerr, Accredited Programs, deviated slightly from the usual question and answer session to bring “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” to the June 24 communications meeting.

Pam Fogle, Infection Control, was the lucky manager, selected by virtue of a red star on the back of her chair, to sit in the hot seat. Like the game show, Fogle had the phone a friend, poll the audience and 50:50 options to help her answer questions. Although Fogle made it to the million-dollar mark by answering a variety of this month’s JCAHO topics correctly, Kerr remarked that the million-dollar prize wasn’t exactly in the budget. But Fogle still received a prize for her hard work, including movie tickets and a star for her office door.

Kerr and her colleagues present the JCAHO review at the end of each month in order to promote continued readiness for November’s survey date.
