Faculty Senate elections coming up

by Elaine Amella
Chair, Governance Committee of the Faculty Senate
The representative body of the faculty of the Medical University, the Faculty Senate, will be nominated and elected in the upcoming weeks.

The Faculty Senate plays a critical role in the life of the university as it works in the interest of the faculty as well as represents the faculty's perspective in numerous issues and forums. During the 2002-03 year, the senate dealt with the revision of the standardized faculty contract, tenure issues, drug-free workplace and gender equity issues.

Approximately one-half of the senate seats are up for election each year. Senate terms are for two years and, at this time senators are eligible to run for a second term. Please consider nominating yourself or a colleague for vacant senate seats or if you're a senator currently completing your first-term, consider nominating yourself for a second term.

Nominations and balloting will occur electronically and are facilitated by Francine Margolius, margolfr@musc.edu, and Ben Gilbertson, gilberts@musc.edu. A valid MNA password is needed to nominate and vote. Look for the nomination form that will appear Aug. 18.

Nominations will remain open through Aug. 29. Elections will be held from Sept. 1 through Sept. 9. The annual retreat for sitting and new senators will be 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 16. The first meeting of the senate will occur on Oct. 7.

Senate meetings are open to all faculty and unless otherwise announced, take place from 7:45 to 9 a.m. on the first Tuesday of the month in the Administration Building.
