Women's Research Center

Request for pilot project proposals on women's issues

In October 2002, the National Institute of Health (NIH) provided Kathleen T. Brady, M.D., Ph.D., and Carrie Randall, Ph.D., a five-year award of approximately $4.4 million to fund a research center focused on gender-based translational research at MUSC. Four interdisciplinary research components have come together to create the Women's Research Center (WRC).

The goal of the WRC is to create a single, regional, unified, interdisciplinary program designed to attract trainees and new faculty into women's health research at MUSC.

This type of grant, which allows for integrated, thematic research with infrastructure support and institutional and scientific leadership is extremely timely. This WRC “team” will foster intellectual interactions from individuals representing different disciplines resulting in creative thinking, novel ideas, and collaborative efforts.

The WRC has a total of $30,000 available to fund pilot projects related to gender or women's issues. The project may be either a clinical or basic science study. The purpose of the pilot funding provided by the WRC is to provide support for the collection of preliminary data, with the ultimate goal of supporting an R01 application.

All submissions will be reviewed and funded on or about Nov. 1. Funding is limited to one year.

Individuals interested in submitting a pilot project for consideration should follow the guidelines set below.

Guidelines:

  • Submit a brief, 3-5 page description of your project using the following format:

  •  A. Statement of the Problem
     B. Primary hypothesis/es
     C. Methods
     D. Significance
  • Submit a budget and a brief budget justification. Budgets must be no more than $30K.
The deadline for receipt of proposals is 4 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 30.
Submit proposals and address inquiries to Jennifer Romagnoli Belcher, program coordinator, Women's Research Center, belcherj@musc.edu.

Funding for the Women's Research Center provided by: NIDA/ORWH: 1 P50 AR049551 in partnership with MUSC.
