MUSC offers classes, activities for September

Heart and Vascular Health
Twelve Months to a Healthier Heart Program brings you a year of screenings, online assessment tools, special events, classes and talks covering heart health, nutrition, stress management, behavior modification and fitness. Earn prizes based on frequency of participation in classes and special events as well as on progress made in meeting heart health goals. Prizes include items such as cookbooks, T-shirts, pedometers, yoga mats and more.

Members receive a newsletter with updates about activities and events, along with nutrition and lifestyle tips that will help you take charge of your heart health.

Heart Health Education/Support
Free Class/Support Group—Living with Congestive Heart Failure. Second Wednesday of each month, 3 - 4 p.m. Call 792-1616 to register. Mathis Ferry Plantation (formerly Park Place Assisted Living), Mount Pleasant.

Adult nurse practitioner Lanna Smith, R.N., with the MUSC Heart Failure Program, will discuss all aspects of managing congestive heart failure.

Fitness/Active Lifestyles
2003 Lowcountry American Heart Walk and Little Hearts Walk. Sept. 27. Walk starts at 9 a.m. Call 853-1597. Liberty Square Park, Aquarium Wharf (in front of S.C. Aquarium). 

Come by the MUSC Heart and Vascular Center and Children's Hospital tents after the walk. There will be heart-related health information and activities for the whole family.

Bone and Joint Care
MUSC Arthritis Exercise Program

MUSC Bone and Joint Center—Department of Physical Therapy, 2125 Charlie Hall Blvd., West Ashley.

Exercise program designed for the individual needs of the arthritis patient.

Free talk—Arthritis and Exercise
Sept. 23, 4 - 5 p.m. Call 792-1414 to register. Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community. 1 Gadsden Way, James Island.

Melissa Frisch, physical therapist with the MUSC Arthritis Exercise Program, will discuss the various types of arthritis and how exercise can be beneficial for easing symptoms for arthritis sufferers.

Cancer Care
Free—Coping with Cancer
Held the first Tuesday and second Thursday of every month. Call 792-3346 to register. MUSC Hollings Cancer Center patient library, first floor.

A free program for patients, caregivers and loved ones whose lives have been touched by cancer. Facilitated by Elena Bell, MUSC social worker.

Children's Health
Free—Car Seat Safety Check
First Tuesday of every month, 4-6 p.m., except on holidays. Call 740-9133 to make an appointment. Babies R Us, Rivers Avenue, North Charleston.

Let experts check to make sure your seat is installed correctly and has not been recalled. Offered as a community service of Trident Area Safe Kids and Babies R Us.

Digestive Health
Free Screening for Chronic Heartburn Sufferers
Onoing. Call 792-0612 to schedule with the MUSC Digestive Disease Center.

Receive information on the serious side effects of chronic heartburn and be screened for Barrett's Esophagus, a pre-cancerous condition.

Ear, Nose and Throat Health
Free talk—Chronic Hoarseness: Causes and Treatments
Sept. 23, 6-7 p.m. Call 792-1414 to register. East Cooper Regional Medical Center.

K.G. Hoang, M.D., head and neck surgeon with MUSC Otolaryngology, will discuss the causes and treatments of hoarseness, along with early signs and symptoms of head and neck cancer.

Free talk—Help for Allergy Sufferers
Sept. 29, 12  - 1 p.m. and 6 - 7 p.m. Call 792-1414 to register for one of these class times.  East Cooper Medical Center.

Mark Hoy, M.D., medical director of the Allergy Division of the Sinus and Allergy Center at MUSC University ENT Associates in Mount Pleasant, will present the latest treatment options to help Lowcountry allergy sufferers.

Free talk—Pediatric ENT Problems That Affect School Performance
Sept. 30, 12 - 1 p.m. and 6 - 7 p.m. Call 792-1414 to register for one of these class times. East Cooper Regional Medical Center.

Lucinda Halstead, M.D., medical director for Evelyn Trammell Institute for Voice and Swallowing at MUSC University ENT Associates in Mount Pleasant, will discuss common ENT problems that can affect a child's school performance (i.e. sinusitis, allergies, speech and hearing difficulties). Signs and symptoms that parents should watch for will be covered, as well as the latest treatment options.

Special Event
Sickle Cell Awareness Day in the Park
Sept. 13, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Call 792-4056. 

There will be games, prizes drawings, sickle cell screenings along with fun educational activities for the whole family. Presented by COBRA in partnership with the MUSC Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology
