Ward named Teacher of the Year for CHP

Students from the Department of Health Administration and Policy named David Ward, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Health Administration and Policy, the College of Health Professions Teacher of the Year at the College’s Annual Hooding and Awards Ceremony during graduation week.

Dr. Danielle Ripich presents Dr. David Ward with the CHP Teacher of the Year Award.

“I was truly surprised to win the Teacher of the Year Award,” Ward said. “Our college and our department prides itself on the quality of its teaching. To be chosen from such a strong group of educators is a real honor.”

Ward teaches financial management and accounting to students in the Master in Health Administration program and research methods to students in the Doctor of Health Administration program.

His vast knowledge of financial management, teaching skills, rapport with students, and overall professional attributes led students to nominate him for the award.

In the classroom, Ward structures each class session to be different and unique.

“I believe that at the graduate level, our role is to get our students to think creatively about particular subject matter. It is creative thinking and problem solving skills that will enable them to excel in their careers,” he said.

Ward graduated from Colgate University and completed his masters and doctorate at New York University.  He joined MUSC in 1996 and was named department chair in 2000.

According to students, Ward is always available for classroom, career planning, or general life advice and fellowship. To them, it’s obvious he feels great pride in the department and strives to continue its progress in the future.

“In and out of the classroom, David Ward cares about educating students,” said Danielle Ripich, Ph.D., College of Health Professions dean. “Under Dr. Ward’s leadership, DHAP has created two new educational delivery programs for the MHA, (a day residential program, and an executive distance program), developed a Center for Health Economics and Policy where students work and learn, and invested in a strong residency and internship model to assist students.”
