Free seminars to showcase bioinformatics Web siteBioinformatics will present a series of free seminars this fall to showcase the Web-based Bioinformatics software and databases from the National Center for Biotechnology Information, MUSC, and anywhere else on the Internet. The idea is to create an event that is part journal club, part class. Each week’s selected site will be examined “live” during the session, with a series of illustrative questions. All questions can be answered via the software and databases provided. Participants will have access to a few practice questions and procedures for answering the real questions. Sessions will build upon one another, but participants are welcome to pick and choose according to their interests. Each session also includes downloadable PDF files and interactive Web pages. The seminars will be held from 1 to 2 p.m., every Wednesday, in room 438 of the Library/Administration Building, which hosts 28 computers for hands-on access. All MUSC faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend. The following is a list of upcoming seminars and topics: Sept. 24: DNA Analysis Tools, including SeqWeb and W2H; Oct. 1: Protein Analysis Tools, including SeqWeb and W2H; Oct. 8: Structure Viewers I—Cn3D and Swiss-PDBViewer; Oct.15: Structure Viewers II—RASMOL, Protein Explorere, CHIME, ViewerLite; Oct. 22: Human Genome Tools – NCBI Mapviewer; and Oct. 29: VISTA Tools at UC-Berkeley.
