Health Sciences Foundation elects board of directors

The Health Sciences Foundation, which supports education, research, patient care, and other programs at MUSC, elected a new board of directors at its Aug. 15 meeting, introducing several new members. 

The foundation retained its current chairman of the board, Charleston resident Wilbur J. Prezzano, retired vice chairman of the Eastman Kodak Company. 

Burton R. Schools, a Charleston native and retired executive vice president of finance at Piggly Wiggly Carolina, also was re-elected as vice chairman of the board.

The new treasurer, John E. Thompson, is a Charleston native and a former investment banker.

Thomas P. Anderson was also re-elected as secretary of the board. The Charleston-born Anderson is the CEO for the Health Sciences Foundation.

Other board members who were re-elected include Arthur C. McFarland, a partner with McFarland and O’Neill law firm in Charleston, and Rita Littles O’Neill, vice president of WCSC-TV. 

Also re-elected were Vernon E. Merchant, a retired physician living in Anderson; Kelley Smith, an administrator for the Anderson Skin and Cancer Clinic; and Jack R. Williams, president of Lake Cruises, Inc., and resident of Terrell, N.C.

New members of the board include Carlos Evans, executive vice president with Wachovia Bank in Charlotte, N.C., and Harold Hirsch, a COM alumnus and entrepreneur living in Birmingham, Ala.

Rick Throckmorton, a former Booz-Allen executive from Charleston, is also a new board member. He joins Charleston’s Walter G. Seinsheimer, president and board member of Dolphin Architects and Builders, and fellow Charlestonian Richard D. Elliott, president and owner of Maverick Southern Kitchens.

Barnwell resident Claudia Peeples was re-appointed by MUSC’s board of trustees as one of the board’s three members on the Health Sciences Foundation. 

Harold B. Holmes, M.D., was elected as an emeritus member of the board. Holmes is a resident of Conway, S.C.
