City you were born: Los Angeles.

Family: Wife, Gyda (originally from Germany).

Favorite holiday tradition: Going home to L.A.

Fond childhood memory: Family reunions with 36 first cousins and aunts, uncles, second cousins, grandparents in Mesilla, the old town of Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Ingredient you must have in your refrigerator: Cheese.

Favorite dish from your Hispanic heritage: Enchilada torte.

Hobbies, activities in your free time:Cooking, gardening and working on my house on James Island.

Special family item that has been handed down to you: The cookbook that my grandparents put together with recipes they used in the family restaurant in Mesilla.

What is your biggest challenge at work: Managing my time between my faculty obligations and keeping the research program going.

Best advice you've ever received: My father always said, “You don't learn anything if it works the first time.” I have found this to be very true.
