Health Sciences Foundation elects board of directorsAnita G. Zucker was elected chair of the board of directors of the Health Sciences Foundation at a recent meeting.The purpose of the foundation is to support education, research, patient care and other programs of MUSC. Zucker, of Charleston, is a mother, businesswoman and former school teacher. William (Bill) A. Baker Jr., of Kiawah Island, chair of the board of The Baker Companies headquartered in Pleasantville, N.Y., was elected vice chair. John E. Thompson, of Charleston, former investment banker, was elected treasurer. Thomas P. Anderson, of Charleston, chief executive officer for the Health Sciences Foundation, will serve as secretary. Newly elected to the board to fill a vacancy for the 2003-06 term were: Thomas P. Anderson, of Charleston; and J. Egerton Burroughs of Conway/Myrtle Beach. Newly elected to the board for a three-year term were: Clarice Cato Goodyear of Charlotte, N.C., a member of the state House of Representatives Interim Committee of the Prevention and Disposition of Unwanted and Abandoned Animals; Robert J. Sywolski, of Charleston, CEO of Blackbaud Inc.; John E. Thompson Jr., of Charleston, a former investment banker; Burroughs, the owner of Carolina Consultant Company and chairman of the board of directors of Burroughs & Chapin Company; Keith Waring, of Charleston, owner of Charlestowne Associates, a financial management firm; and Dr. Harold Z. Hirsch, of Birmingham, Ala., a periodontist, chairman/CEO of the Golden Bird ENT LLC, and an alumnus of MUSC College of Dental Medicine. Re-elected for a second three-year term were: William A. Baker Jr. of Kiawah Island, a retired real estate developer from New York; Darla Moore, a Lake City, native, chief executive officer of Rainwater Inc.; Gerald A. Wilson, M.D., a native of Hartsville, and practicing general and peripheral vascular surgeon with Midlands Surgical Associates P.A. in Columbia; and Zucker. Charles L. Appleby Jr., of Florence ; and Thomas C. Rowland, M.D., of Columbia, were appointed by MUSC’s Board of Trustees as representatives to the Health Sciences Foundation Board.
