Recognizing
workplace veterans
Supporting our nation's cause for freedom and peace worldwide by honoring
MUSC employee veterans was the theme for the second Military Recognition
Day program held Nov. 10.
Department
of Public Safety Honor Guard present the colors during the Nov. 10 Military
Recognition Day.
The event honors the duties and commitment of many uniformed men and
women for their service and contributions as active and responsible citizens
at work and at home.
New to this year's event was a musical presentation performed by The
Citadel Chorale and Women's Ensemble. The program also recognized MUSC
veterans and their impact in the community by sponsoring a Tri-county high
school student essay contest on the theme, “What Veteran's Day Means to
Me.” Twenty-nine students, representing three area high schools, submitted
500-word entries.
The first place winners, Stratford High School seniors Layla McMichael
and Christopher Pearson, were present to read their essays and honored
with a gift certificate during the ceremony.

What Veteran’s Day Means to Me
Throughout the year, holidays are scattered as celebrations of religion,
race, or history. People give gifts, receive days off from school or work,
or just reflect. But there is one holiday that rarely receives such attention,
and is often over looked. Veteran’s Day is a day to remember those men
and women that gave their childhoods, time, or their very lives to fight
for this country. They are the too frequently forgotten heroes of the American
people, and even though there is a holiday in commemoration of their service,
few take the time to think of what Veteran’s Day really means.
Veteran’s Day is a time to think of and appreciate the service of the
men and women that have fought for this country in wartime, or those that
dedicated their lives in peacetime. They are too often disregarded, and
until September Eleventh they were hardly thought of. To me, Veteran’s
Day should honor those that served in the arm forces. Without them, America
would not only be nonexistent, but would hardly resemble the America we
know today. Not only that, but the world would be a very different place.
These men and women don’t just protect our coasts, but protect foreign
countries in need. They can defeat an invading enemy in a country that
could not defend itself. They also keep order in countries on the
brink of chaos, when the domestic government of that country can no longer
maintain control. These men and women give their freedom and lives
so that people all over the world can keep those rights for themselves.
So to me, Veteran’s Day is a day set aside to remember the service of
those valiant soldiers on our soil and outside our coasts. We should remember
these people in our prayers, and when we have our day off, take the time
to think about their service and how it has influenced our lives. Take
this occasion to thank anyone you know that served in the military whether
it be a family member or neighbor; we all know someone who was a part of
the armed forces. A person can take the time to talk to a grandparent or
retired soldier and ask about what their time in the military was like
and tell them how much they appreciate their sacrifice. A person does not
have to limit themselves to former servicemen, especially in the light
of a current war. They can tell someone currently in the military that
their dedication is respected. Take one day out of the 365 in a year and
say something in regards to a person’s service.

What Veteran’s Day Means to Me
A jovial crowd waltzes down the street holding signs and tributes to
our nation’s current and veteran soldiers. The local VFW marches behind
them in their flourished uniforms of old. The local base marches behind
them, color guard and all, perfectly spaced and in-step. This is the common
sight on Veteran’s Day, and many adults see it as a way to proclaim their
trust and respect of the nation’s armed forces. It is a day to celebrate
our country’s modern and pre-modern heroes, but what does it mean to a
normal teenage boy? Simply, it is history, respect, and pride.
Stratford
High School senior Christopher Pearson reads his first place essay, “What
Veteran's Day Means To Me.”
As a youngster, I was continuously interested in the matters of history,
namely famous battles and ancient wars. As time progressed and our knowledge
of our country’s history grew, we began to idolize the soldiers of more
recent wars, WWI, WWII and the Asiatic campaigns.Upon entering high school,
our comprehension of the gravity of these hostilities became clear to us.
These heroic feats were no more than a few years ago, and yet they have
shaped the way we lice our lives today. It is part of our current history.
The ground taken and the massive scales of the battlefronts stand as a
testament, a monument, to the genius and unsurpassed battle tactics employed
in every US campaign. The battle might not be a complete victory, but it
stands in the records next to Caesar, Napoleon, and Patton.
There is much respect for the heroes of war, publicized and not. The
men and women who gave their complete selves for the sake of their children,
grandchildren, and even great grandchildren, showed us what unselfishness
truly means. This deed and service that they have done for us is greater
than history will ever know. A book will only give your words. A soldier
will give you his heart and soul. The great sacrifices that the men and
women of the armed services have made are the corner stone of this great
nation. Built upon their blood, sweat and tears, is a nation that
will hold its ground and stand prepared to defend its morals and ideals
with little hesitation. For this, one can never be grateful enough.
In appreciating our American heroes, we show our pride and faith in
them. Without them, we would be nothing. They are the men and women who
step up to defend what they so dearly believe in. They face the challenges
that many could not, and they define what being a true American is. Our
pride in them is more than words can tell. Just ask the children of fathers
who have been transferred, of mothers whose children have been deployed,
and of spouses whose loved ones have been away for so long. Through all
of the sacrifices and heartaches, they still hold their heads high, knowing
that their loved ones are serving their country with dignity and honor,
and knowing that we can sleep safely at night, is a gift of the undying
love of the soldiers of our past, present and future.
