Gonsalves honored with AAFP teaching awardAssistant professor Wanda Gonsalves, M.D., Department of Family Medicine, was honored by the American Association of Family Practitioners (AAFP) with an exemplary teaching award at their annual assembly Oct. 12 in Orlando, Fla.Gonsalves joined MUSC’s staff in August 2003 from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine where she received her medical degree and served as the residency director for the past five years. This national award was presented in honor of her dedication to medical residency education and efforts as a mentor and organizer of a successful, student-run community health clinic. The grant-funded program gave medical students some valuable pre-clinical skill experience and allowed them to give back to the community. At MUSC, Gonsalves assists with the doctoring curriculum and is currently finalizing plans for a formal service learning elective for medical students. She serves as faculty advisor to the Student National Medical Association and hopes to continue her interests in service learning in medical education, plus support minority and oral health. This annual award is presented to a full-time, part-time and volunteer
faculty associated with the education and preparation of family medicine
practitioners. Nominees are recommended by former medical students, residents
and their peers.
