Quarterly
AREA Award winners recognized
Each quarter, Ambulatory Care Services recognizes outstanding employees
who demonstrate the organization’s values of Accountability, Respect, Excellence,
and Adaptability (AREA). Staff members who have received an Applause
for Caring card or have been applauded on the Patient Satisfaction Survey
during the quarter are automatically eligible for the AREA Award.
Fourth quarter 2003 AREA Award recipients are: Penny Dawson, patient
registration representative, Pediatrics; Early Griffin III, manager, Support
Services; and Travis L. Porcher, supply support associate.
Dawson was nominated by two patients.

“This employee went out of her way to show me and my family directions
from the hospital to our hotel. After clocking out, she met us in
the parking garage in her car, and we followed her to our hotel.
This was very kind of her. We are from Spartanburg and did not have directions.
She has a good personality and is very kind and considerate.”
Griffin was nominated by a manager and an administrative
assistant.
Quarterly
award winner Early Griffin, third from right, is honored with a cake and
plaque. He was awarded for going the extra mile.
“It was discovered this morning that the ultrasound equipment at Prenatal
Wellness Center was broken, and they had a day booked full of patients.
There was an ultrasound machine at McClennan-Banks that could be used but
needed a truck with a hydraulic lift to transport it. I paged Early, and
he immediately said he could help us. He got the truck from physical plant,
went to McClennan-Banks, got the equipment, took it to Prenatal Wellness,
and also took the coordinator to get another piece of equipment. He always
helps everyone on a daily basis, but I thought this time was especially
nice. Thank you!”
Porcher was nominated by a patient.

He was one of three selected for the quarterly award.
“We drove here from Columbia. After being treated, we went to the parking
lot only to find that our car would not start. We called transportation
for a boost twice, and it wouldn’t work. We asked about 20 or 25 people
if they had a regular cable that would make the connection from car to
car. The only man who had one could not stay long enough to boost the cable
up. Then out of the blue, Mr. Porcher said, ‘I’m going to buy you a battery.’
(We had been in the parking lot for a long time.) He said, ‘You don’t have
to pay me back. It’s getting late and you ladies really need to get on
the road to Columbia.’ And that’s what he did. He bought us a battery.
And we couldn’t pay him, but we got home safe and sound thanks to him.
May God bless him and let him know in some way that his kindness was really
appreciated. Really, I asked him who he was? I think he was God in disguise.”
The Ambulatory Care Prize Patrol surprised each of these individuals
in his/her practice setting. Each recipient received an AREA Award badge
holder, a framed certificate, a Be My Guest dining card in the amount of
$50, and a cake to share with his/her coworkers.
