Recumbent cyclist raises cancer funds

Albert Howard, 72, of Bradenton, Fla., set out on a recumbent bike May 30 to attempt to travel almost 1,300 miles to raise money for his daughter’s cancer treatment and cancer research efforts at Hollings Cancer Center.

Howard’s daughter, Debra Ann, 47, has a rare and aggressive form of cancer (Stage 3A Uterine Papalliary Serous Carcinoma) and has no medical coverage.  She is the single mother of a teenage daughter, an artist by profession, and a multiple athlete in distance swimming, triathalons, and sailing.

Albert Howard rides in on his recumbent bike with an escort from daughter Debra June 1.

On May 16, Howard began his trip from Washington, D.C., to his home in Bradenton, Fla. He made a stop in Charleston on June 1 at MUSC's Hollings Cancer Center to present the funds raised.

Before beginning his trip, Howard sent a letter to friends and potential sponsors that included his itinerary and a picture of Debra. Howard has raised more than $16,000.
