Free brown bag lunch seminars to be held 

The University Human Resources Management  Training Department is sponsoring the 2004 Brown Bag Lunch Series. 

The Brown Bag Lunch seminars are free, one-hour informational sessions on a variety of topics. 

All seminars are presented from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursdays in Room 451, Basic Science Building. Feel free to bring your lunch. Registration is not required.

July 8: Want to Buy a Home but Don’t Have the Down Payment? 
Michaele Russell and Debbie Kidd, Homeownership Resource Center—Family Services, will give tips on buying your first home. The session will discuss the various down payment assistance programs, low interest rate programs and forgivable grants for the first time homebuyer. Find out how to enroll in a first-time homebuyer workshop where eligible graduates can participate in many first time homebuyer mortgage options such as the S.C. State Housing program (ex. $4,000 down payment given, home mortgage loan rate 4 percent interest). Had a mortgage in the past? You could still qualify. Credit problems preventing homeownership? Russell and Kidd will give information on how to over come this obstacle.

July 15: How to Create a Backyard Habitat 
Chris Wood, Wild Birds Unlimited, will present this session on bringing people and nature together. This session is for people who want to create an environment to attract songbirds to come to their yards using food, water, shelter, and places to raise young.

July 22: End-of-Life Issues 
What happens if you are not competent or able to communicate a desire to die a natural death? Have you chosen a person to make medical care decisions for you if you are not competent or able to communicate them yourself? Do you know the answers to these questions for your family members? Annette Drachman, J.D., director of legal affairs for MUHA, will answer these questions and discuss other end-of-life legal issues relating to you and your family members.

July 29: American Sign Language 
Say volumes without speaking a single word— communicate with your hands. Christine Carpenter-Stewart, HR Employee Relations and Retention consultant, will present this fun and simple crash course in American Sign Language using common, everyday words to enhance your customer service skills in the workplace.

Aug. 5: Create a Beautiful Flower Garden 
Tom Thurman and Peggy Wiggins, MUSC Facilities and Engineering, will present this workshop on designing landscape areas using flowers and shrubs.

Aug. 12: Pet First Aid 
When your pet has an emergency, being prepared is very important. Philippe Gresle, HRM IT and operations manager, will present some basic first aid and emergency care procedures for cats and dogs. He also will present tips for keeping your pet happy and healthy.

Aug. 19: Does Skin Care Have to Be Expensive? 
What do you really need in skin care? Is it really necessary to buy expensive products? Learn more about skin care basics with Dr. Amie Shannon, MUSC dermatologist.
